India will be one of the World’s Top 10 Ecommerce Hubs by 2015

E-Commerce market is booming in India. Companies like Flipkart and eBay India are doing extremely well. Even group buying sites like Taggle are switching to ecommerce model considering its huge potential.
eBay India Head (Partnerships and Pop Culture) Deepa Thomas says that ecommerce business will continue to expand in India and the country will be one of the top 10 e-commerce hubs in the world by 2015.
“India definitely will be among the Top 10 e-commerce hubs of the world by 2015 as it is the fourth largest internet users in the world,” Deepa Thomas said.
However, there are few challenges faced by the country like lack of quality broadband connectivity in some regions. “India is still not as connected as it should be. Connectivity beyond metros needs to be better. In countries like Philippines and Malaysia, the broadband penetration is good ,” she added
Deepa also pointed out  that out of the major cities in the country, Bangalore, in particular has potential to become  the number one e-commerce centre in the country.
“The city had been in the top five list of e-commerce states until now. It has jumped to top three. Bangalore has immense potential as it is active on all fronts like e-commerce, imports and exports. However, Bangalore would face competition from Mumbai and Delhi this year as those cities have larger number of internet users,” she said.
When asked about the online group buying sites in India, Thomas said that the space was already saturated.
“Bloggers and small e-commerce sites are no threats to companies like eBay. In fact these small sites wish to occupy space on our site to build credibility in the market. We actually encourage bloggers to share deals,” she said.
This year eBay acquired GSI Commerce, a leading provider of ecommerce and interactive marketing services, for $2.4 billion.”Definitely there are acquisitions that have happened, but there are no acquisitions right now on our radar,” Deepa stated.
